What is The One Mask Project?

The One Mask that'll protect us all!

The One Mask Project

Yes, we all had hoped for a better decade, a fun summer, trips with friends and family, and going out on dates but 2020 did not deliver. It started off rocky what with the Australian fires, the looming World War 3, and Kobe Bryant and his daughter's demise; but all that was thrust to the background when the coronavirus pandemic hit the center stage. People were left vulnerable and scared due to the sudden absence of any means of safety.
With everyone scurrying to arm themselves against COVID-19 by using face masks, the country is facing a massive shortage of them. The fact that the masks available in the market, the recommended N95 respirators, are heavily priced is making them inaccessible for the common man. Desperate essential workers are turning to homemade masks due to the shortage of affordable face masks. Even the people working at the front-line are making do with simple handkerchiefs which, needless to say, aren't the best protection against the novel coronavirus.
People are falling sick rapidly without any means of defense to safeguard them from this pandemic. With India's population of over 130 crore people, there is no way that everyone has the resources to buy expensive masks whose prices are rising with the demand. But we all know face masks are an essential tool to fight the virus.
To offer a helping hand, we at Merge Garage decided to shift from merchandising to manufacturing face masks. We felt compelled to shift our focus to help as much as we could in these trying times. We started with two simple goals: To make masks affordable while ensuring a level of protection similar to the N95 masks and to make them reusable to lessen the environmental impact.
With landfills overflowing and the added risk of wrongly disposing of the masks (which are technically considered medical waste), we really wanted to develop a better product that could address this problem and reduce the negative environmental impact due to a large number of disposed of masks.
With weeks of research, multiple designs and prototypes, and endless trials, we finally had a product in our hands that we were proud of. The masks we made ticked all the boxes – They were reusable, they provided greater than 97% Bacterial Filtration Efficiency, and most importantly, they would cost just a fraction of an N95 mask. We call them 'The One Mask'.
We introduced a 4-layer face mask (2 layers of jersey cotton fabric on the outer shells and 2 layers of microdot, non-woven fabric filters) that is capable of achieving a staggering 97.58% bacterial filtration efficiency while making sure you look stylish by choosing from an array of vibrant colors. And if you are a business looking for masks, we can also customize the masks to showcase your company logo and help you build a brand.
Keeping in line with our mission to help people protect themselves, we decided to donate masks to those in need. For every pair we sell, we have pledged to donate one mask. Thus introducing, ‘The One Mask Project’. The project’s goal is to donate 1 crore masks in the coming months. We recognize the need for face masks now more than ever and we are determined to do our part.
We have already started the production of masks and have shipped a couple of batches. We've got overwhelmingly positive feedback for the product's quality and we are very proud of the fact that these are the masks that are helping protect the most underprivileged.
This is where you come in! You too can help us extend this goodwill. You can either buy a pair of masks for yourselves and allow us to donate a mask or just donate as many masks as you can through our website. Our project is already in the works; we need your help to reach our goal of donating 1 crore masks. We urge you to take this step to help save our fellow citizens. Join us and help us fight this pandemic by doing your part.
